Vale seeking more than 90 pct iron price hike

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 5 (Reuters) - Brazilian miner Vale (VALE.N: Quote, Profile, Research)(VALE5.SA: Quote, Profile, Research) is seeking an increase of more than 90 percent for iron ore from Japans JFE steel as spot market rates soar for the steel ingredient, a Brazilian newspaper reported on Friday.

Brazils Valor newspaper said JFE (5411.T: Quote, Profile, Research), the worlds sixth-biggest steelmaker, was willing to accept the proposal, citing unidentified sources.

The paper said, the worlds largest iron ore producer, Vale did not comment on the information. A Vale spokeswoman on Thursay told Reuters the company would not comment on iron price negotiations.

The industry publication Steel Business Briefing said on Thursday that Vale was seeking two 40 percent price hikes in March and April from Brazilian steelmakers, also without identifying sources.

Vale has insisted on a higher iron benchmark price as the spot market remains near $130 per tonne - double the benchmark -- on strong demand from China and recovery in Europe and the United States. (Reporting by Brian Ellsworth; Editing by John Picinich)

Flamengo Striker Adriano Comes To Blows With Former Girlfriend

Adriano is back in trouble after coming to blows with former girlfriend Joana Machado.

According to a report on Globoesporte.com, Machado, a personal trainer, allegedly attacked the player who pushed her away during a scuffle at a party in Rio De Janeiro on Thursday night. Machado was allegedly drunk when she went for the former Inter striker who was with several Flamengo team-mates.

Machado then went outside to throw strones at and kick Adrianos car, causing damage. As a result of the fight, the striker was unable to train with Flamengo on Friday and he has not travelled with them to Venezuela where they play Caracas FC in the Copa Libertadores next week.

Adrianos relationship with Machado started in 2008 when he played for Inter, but then came to an end last year. He started to see her again at the start of 2010.

Cruise gets queasy in Brazil; 195 sick

Brazilian authorities reportedly placed an international cruise ship under isolation at a tourist resort when nearly 200 passengers came down with gastrointestinal illness.

The National Health Surveillance Agency, Anvisa, ordered all 1,987 passengers and 765 crew to remain aboard the Vision of the Seas anchored at Buzios while teams of doctors treat the 195 passengers suffering vomiting and diarrhea and determine the cause of their illness, Brazils G1 website reported.

The ship, operated by Royal Caribbean International, had departed the port of Santos on Monday for a four-day tour including scheduled stops in Buzios and Ilhabela.

In January 2009 on a cruise bound for Buenos Aires, 464 people took ill as the ship sailed between Brazils northern city Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.

A founder of Bossa Nova music has died in Brazil after fighting prostate cancer

A founder of Bossa Nova music has died in Brazil after fighting prostate cancer. He was 80.

Pianist Johnny Alf was called the true father of Bossa Nova by Ruy Castro, who wrote a definitive history of the music. Alf widely influenced later stars.

A statement from a hospital near Sao Paulo says Alf died Thursday evening of multiple organ failure.

Alf was born Alfredo Jose da Silva on May 19, 1929, in Rio de Janeiro. He was an aficionado of early American jazz, which greatly influenced his work and that of Bossa Nova as a whole.

He appeared on 46 albums, but only recorded nine solo records.

His 1955 songs Rapaz de bem and O Tempo e o vento are considered by many the start of Bossa Nova.

Brazil February Inflation Sends Mixed Signals To Rate Setters

Brazils annual inflation rose above government target levels for a second consecutive month in February, but there is enough ambiguity in the data to make policy makers hesitate to raise interest rates.

Brazils rolling 12-month inflation was 4.83% in February, up from 4.59% in January, the Brazilian Census Bureau, or IBGE, said Friday. The official annual target is 4.5%.

Analysts are wondering whether the latest numbers add weight in favor of a rate increase when the central banks interest rate-setting committee, or Copom, meets March 17.

Eulina dos Santos, coordinator for IPCA data at IBGE, said 2010 has already accumulated inflation of 1.54%, well above the 1.03% in the first two months of 2009.

Discounting inflationary pressures normal for this time of year, such as in education and food, what has caused this level of much higher inflation is the recovery of the economy itself, said Dos Santos.

However, Dos Santos, pointed out that inflation in education costs in January and February may have skewed the data for those months.

If inflation were calculated without education costs, then it would have eased 0.35 percentage points in the first two months of the year, compared to the year-ago period. This proves that the trend for inflation in other costs is to fall, she said.

The effects of seasonal factors and adjustments in administered prices are bound to fade and may slow the overall inflation rate, agreed Flavio Serrano of investment bank BES Investimentos.

Nevertheless, the dynamism of economic activity is likely to keep core inflation running slightly above the targeted level and raise the odds of an interest rate hike this month, he said.

In the next few weeks, the balance between inflation expectations and economic activity readings are likely to play a key role in the Copoms decision, Serrano added.

Brazils debt market is betting 50%-60% on a rate hike in March, said Octavio Vaz, a trader at Rio de Janeiros Global Equity, although his firm is predicting no change in March rates. The benchmark Selic rate is currently at a record-low 8.75%.

Although IPCA inflation will be considered by Copom later this month, other factors must also be brought into the equation.

Industrial capacity usage figures released Thursday showed a slight decline in January to 81.4% from 81.5% in December. Industrial output figures for February, while strong, suggested the pace of expansion was decelerating or settling.

Finance Minister Guido Mantega said Monday he believed the central banks decision to raise bank reserve requirements would help control inflation by curbing the local credit supply. Im hoping it wont take any other measures, he said.

Speaking in New York Friday, Brazilian Central Bank President Henrique Meirelles acknowledged that raising reserve requirements affects monetary policy, but said it isnt a substitute for interest rates.

Interest rates are the most important and effective measure for monetary policy, he added, declining to say on whether rates will be raised at the next policy meeting.

Karrie Webb to be good enough to play in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

A REVITALISED Karrie Webb believes an old girl of 41 can still be good enough in 2016 to head off the youthful invasion of womens golf to secure a dream career finale at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Olympic swimming great Dawn Fraser believes it, too. She is in Webbs corner with encouragement to pursue the heady step up from torchbearer before the 2000 Sydney Olympics to the real thing.

The long-range goal setting has already slipped into Webbs psyche. A boxing kangaroo logo is on her cap for todays final-round bid for a seventh ANZ Ladies Masters title at Royal Pines.

The pure shotmaking and famed mental steel that has kept the hall of famer in the elite ranks of womens golf for 15 years was to wind back by 2016.

No more, it seems.

Before last years announcement of golf getting into the Olympics, I wouldnt have thought Id be playing or touring with a full schedule of events by 2016, Webb said on the Gold Coast.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

Obviously, now the light at the end of the tunnel is a little further away. Just to be able to make the Olympic team would be very special and I will only get one opportunity at it.

Webb has been besotted by the Olympics since she was a kid growing up in Ayr in north Queensland. Fraser, as patron of the ALPG, is a friend and has ferried Webbs mum, Evelyn, and grandmother around Royal Pines in a golf cart.

I actually carried the torch up the steps of the Sydney Town Hall the night before the opening ceremony [of the 2000 Olympics], Webb, 35, recalled.

Her patriotic pulse raced in the stands when Ian Thorpe swam to gold, and she was amazed at the buzz in Bondi when the womens beach volleyball was going off.

I couldnt believe the atmosphere. Ive grown up loving watching the Olympics. To me, the greatest honour would just be to walk out with all the athletes in the opening and closing ceremonies, she said. If I make the team, Id be the old girl of 41 when the Olympics are on. I keep that in the back of my mind as the distant goal.

Webb has already been humbled by what it means to be embraced as more than a golfer. Her Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours list put her in the company of cricket great Dennis Lillee, life-saving doctors, cancer researchers and other high achievers.

Thats why I am so humbled. Im not entirely sure I feel worthy, she said. Ive achieved on the golf course, but the stuff Ive done off the course is only just beginning [with the Karrie Webb Series to aid the countrys best young female amateurs].

She also realises there are no unearned Olympic places handed out even for seven-time major winners when up-and-comers like Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright, Tamie Durdin and Nikki Campbell should be in their prime.
